How to Search Using the NOT Modifier

*All searches will look for matches in both the title and the content of the file and are not case sensitive

Step 1: The NOT Modifier

The NOT modifier is used to narrow search results by removing results that satisfy the NOT condition

The modifier must be typed in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS 

 

Step 2: Using the NOT Modifier

To search using the NOT modifier use the following syntax below

search using the NOT modifier

You can use more than one NOT condition in a search query

e.g. parameter NOT parameter NOT parameter NOT parameter....etc.

Just note that the search will not return documents that satisfy any of the NOT conditions 

Step 3:The Search Results

Here is an example of a search result using a phrase parameter

"Karen Long" 

Without NOT

 

And here is the same phrase search using the NOT modifier to remove any files with an extension: of pdf

"Karen Long" NOT extension:pdf

With NOT

As you can see all files with an extension of .pdf have now been excluded from the search results
